Cycling is always fraught with weather, and we here at the Velofest HQ recognize that cyclists are a hardy bunch. We want to honour that hardiness, and, in the past have had no real chance to do so because we were lousy with fabulous weather at all our events…. Yup, good weather was thick on the ground for the first 10 years of our festival.
It’s only lately that the weather gods have looked down upon us and decided to mix things up a bit. Like last year’s Bikeology: Festival Day, the Bikeology: Outdoor Bike In Movie and this year’s Bikeology: Mocktail Series.
What to do, what to do… Why, continue with the show of course… It’s all a matter of risk management and understanding your audience.
Risk management is clear – When the weather is too extreme or (as in the case of the Outdoor Bike In Movie) too wet from previous rain, making it uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time, we will cancel, and we will let you know via all our usual channels (here, Facebook, Twitter, word of mouth).
Our audience is equally clear – any one who rides a bicycle presently, desires to ride a bicycle, or has just started riding a bicycle… these people are our people. And it turns out they ride during all sorts of weather conditions, so do we. No cookie cutter cyclists, no cookie cutter weather… so we’ll see YOU on the trails, out at the events, decked up in rain gear or not! Promise.
